Welcome to CrossFit Blenheim Limited

We offer a unique, functional fitness, strength and conditioning system called CrossFit. CrossFit exists for anyone, any age, any gender and especially any fitness level. Our workouts are functional, varied and infinitely scalable depending on your ability.

We aim to increase your ability in the 10 components of fitness; Cardiovascular Endurance, Strength, Stamina, Agility, Flexibility, Balance, Power, Speed, Coordination and Accuracy.

The environment at CrossFit Blenheim is different to most commercial gyms. There are no machines. We focus on training the body to move the way it is meant to. You’ll find pull-up bars, Olympic barbells and plates, dumbbells, kettle bells, medicine balls, gymnastic rings, boxing gear and many more CrossFit toys!

At CrossFit Blenheim routine is the enemy. Your coaches, Mark and Kim Gear, will take you through constantly varied, functional training sessions - sessions that force the body to adapt, sessions that always take you one-step closer to your goal. We use chalk, we sweat, we shout and most importantly we know everyone by their first name.

CrossFit is one of the largest growing Strength and Conditioning programs in the world! The CrossFit programme closely mimics day-to-day activities – It’s about developing functional strength. It’s about blurring the lines between cardio and strength – because life makes no distinction.

So why is the CrossFit movement growing so rapidly worldwide? Its scalable to any fitness level, its quick, its functional, and it delivers amazing results. End of Story.

See you at the gym!

Mark and Kim Gear are level 1 CrossFit Trainers and opened the CrossFit Affilated gym; CrossFit Blenheim Limited in April 2013.

Kim’s roles include Administration and memberships as well as coaching and CrossFit Mums. Mark is the head coach and CrossFit programmer, he also does the majority of 1on1’s.

“I have had a passion for sport and fitness since I was younger and represented Marlborough in Cricket and Football. I trained to be a Personal Trainer in Australia, but moved back to Blenheim to be closer to friends and family. I have always been athletic with my sports but I have never been as healthy and strong as I am now with CrossFit.

I love the challenge and competing with myself (or Kim) and I love learning new skills and the sense of achievement when you finally get it! Most importantly I love helping people and sharing CrossFit methods and the Paleo lifestyle with them. It has done so much for me I want to share it with everyone!” – Mark Gear

“My love for training started early as a competitive gymnast. I loved ‘conditioning’ and training hard (but I hated competitions – too nerve racking!). I learnt a lot, many skills such as patience and dedication that transferred into all other aspects of my life! I enjoyed most sports (admittedly I did better at the sports that didn’t use a bat or ball) I loved running, athletics and dancing (and still do!). In 2006, I moved to Dunedin to study Health Sciences after that I completed a certificate in Personal Training and Exercise Prescription at the Otago Institute of Sport. I was also certified as a Group Fitness Instructor and Sports Medic. In 2009 I moved back to my home town, Blenheim and started working as a trainer and group fitness instructor at a local gym = Best move ever as 6 months later I met Mark and 6 months after that he kissed me!! We bought a house together, we got married and we had a baby (Jack David Gear). We had big dreams of owning our own CrossFit gym – it just didn’t seem possible!

One day we decided that we would do whatever it takes to bring CrossFit to Blenheim! We sold our house and our car, wrote our business plan and got some loans. We were/are very lucky to have such supportive families, without them none of this would have been possible. We passed our course to become trainers and got approved as an affiliate in April 2013! We have had lots of support from our clients and we are so grateful to everyone for all their help!

My passion and love of exercise is very strong now, but I have had my ups and downs! I understand and have experienced the lack of motivation and barriers to exercising and weight loss. I even broke up with exercise once, when I was pregnant, I was depressed, I lay in bed all day, my fitness level was zero and I weighed 26kg more than normal. I know what it’s like to start training in a group where everyone is way fitter and faster than you, to start back at zero and slowly build your fitness up. I learned how is feels to come last every time and I learnt that it doesn’t matter. I knew everyday I trained I got stronger, fitter and faster! I loved the challenge and I love the sense of achievement when I improve. CrossFit has motivated me and gave me fitness goals to focus on, the weight loss was just a bonus! CrossFit is my sport and I want to share it with everyone!” – Kim Gear

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Below are some of our frequently asked questions but if you have a question we have not covered here please contact us.

  • What’s the different between CrossFit

     and a regular gym?

We provide personalized coaching during every workout, for every exercise. We not only teach you proper movement, form and technique, we also help you to find a level of intensity within yourself that you may not even realise existed. The sense of camaraderie and community that we develop in our group classes is something you won’t find at a commercial Gym, or through training alone.

  • Are CrossFit workouts really hard?

They are designed to be hard but not impossible. CrossFit workouts are infinitely scale-able. Each workout is custom tailored to your level – but everyone runs through it together, as a group. We’ll help you balance good form, safety and intensity to get the most from your CrossFit workouts. In fact we’ll let you in on a secret, everyone is a little nervous by a WOD (Work Out of the Day) at first: it’s always going to be hard, if it was easy you wouldn’t get the results you want and you’d eventually get bored!

  • Do you have a beginner’s class and what does it involve?

We certainly do! In fact we recommend anyone new to CrossFit to complete at least 6 beginner sessions or a private intro session before graduating to the Open sessions. CrossFit is very different to anything you will have done before and for that reason it is very strict on standards. If the standard is correct there is no issue of safety. You will quickly learn the difference between a movement done wrong and one done right. We will introduce and breakdown the 9 fundamental movements as defined by CrossFit and gradually increase the intensity of the workouts.

  • Can I come to CrossFit Cardio without doing the intro class?

Yes. CrossFit Cardio is all body weight and suitable for anyone over 12 years old. See the timetable for Cardio session times!

  • Do I need some experience or level of fitness?

NO! We believe that anyone has a right to improve their fitness regardless of their current fitness level. Remember CrossFit is scalable for any person of any fitness level.

  • I don’t want to get bulky, I just want to tone up!

WOW this is a new one… Actually it’s not! You will get stronger and leaner. Let us get you fit – we promise, your body composition will fall into line! For specific body composition goals (body fat percentage, gaining muscle etc), book in a consultation with Kim to discuss your nutrition!

  • You have no gym machines, are you waiting for a delivery?

Sorry to have to break this to you, but no and you’ll also notice we don’t have mirrors either. CrossFit is about functional movements natural to your body. Machines force your body into an unnatural movement pattern and artificially isolate muscles, which applies unacceptable levels of force to the joints. Think about it, if you have to carry a couch up three flights of stairs that machine in the gym isn’t going to help you!

  • Will you tie me into a contract like most gyms?

Hopefully you’re starting to see a trend with CrossFit. We’re not like most gyms and therefore we pride ourselves in not operating like one. There are no contracts, just flexible memberships to suit your needs.

  • What should I wear?

Anything that’s comfortable! Boardies, Shorts, 3-quarter length pants, joggers, vest tops, t.shirts, hoodies. Layers are a good option. When you’re working out you can take them off, when you’re cooling down you can put them back on.

  • What facilities do you have?

We have a toilet/changing area, kitchen with tea and coffee facilities and a lounge upstairs where you can relax with your coffee after/before a session. We also have a separate office/reception area for private consultations.
